What is lottery and decentralized selection?
What is lottery?
Some study programs at a university of applied sciences or a university have a limited number of places. If too many students apply, you must participate in a selection process. DUO calls these fixed-quota programs. Read on the website of DUO more about lots.
What is decentralized selection?
Do you want to do a popular education? There is a good chance that you will have to deal with decentralized selection. Educational institutions select the students themselves. Decentralized selection is a strict and difficult procedure.
Decentralized selection means that you cannot just register for a study. You have to go through a whole process. The decentralized selection applies, for example, to studies such as psychology, medicine and most other health care studies. Decentralized selection also applies to business administration and law.
What you need to know:
- The deadline to register for decentralized selection is different at every educational institution. The following applies to all educational institutions: the deadline is very early in the year. For many studies, the deadline is January 15. You can no longer register after the deadline. So find out in the fall what the deadline is for your study!
- After registration, the selection begins. You may have to conduct an intake interview and write a letter of motivation.
- Since the 2016/2017 academic year, you can register for a maximum of one program where decentralized selection applies. So make a good choice. The educational institution determines per program how often you may participate in a selection (minimum once, maximum three times). Please note: for the degree programs in Medicine, Oral Hygiene, Physiotherapy and Dentistry, you can only register at one university of applied sciences or university. More information
- We recommend that you also register for a study program that has your second preference and for which you do not have to make a selection. There is a chance that you will not be admitted. You can then still start a study and possibly participate in the selection again next year.
