How do I register for an HBO or WO study?
Studielink: step by step
Are you younger than 18 and do you not yet have a residence permit? Then you are entitled to education in the Netherlands. The compulsory education and qualification also applies to you. That means you have to go to school to get a basic qualification. This is a diploma at least at HAVO, VWO or MBO 2 level. You may therefore be enrolled at a school or educational institution.
Apply for a DigiD first
Did you start an MBO course before you turned 18? Then you can finish your education. Even if you are still in the asylum procedure or have perhaps even exhausted all legal remedies. It is important that you were still legally residing in the Netherlands when you enrolled at the school. This means that you had a residence permit at the time. Or a W document with which you could demonstrate that you were still in the asylum procedure.
Studielink in eight steps
Can you log in to Studielink? Then sign up for a study. You have to go through eight steps:
1. Personal data
- Enter your official GBA address here. (GBA stands for: Municipal Basic Administration). You are registered at this address in the municipality where you live. Later in the program you can enter a different postal address if you wish.
- Studielink will look for your data in the GBA. If they cannot find you, you will receive a notification. That's okay. You can continue with the registration. The educational institution will then check whether your GBA address is correct.
If you do not have a GBA address, educational institutions can refuse your registration.
That is why it is important to arrange your GBA address in time. - Studielink asks for your O&W correspondence number. You will receive this number if you have had contact with DUO. No number? Then leave it blank.
2. Education Information
You can choose between a bachelor's or master's degree. Only fill in master if you:
- want to follow a university study;
- have received an admission decision.
In all other cases, enter bachelor's degree.
3. Previous education
You can enter any Dutch or foreign diploma here. Don't you have your (foreign) diploma yet? Then enter a random date (in the future) for obtaining your diploma. You can now receive a notification from Studielink: 'Your previous education may not meet the admission requirements'. That's okay. You can continue with your registration. As soon as Studielink has submitted your application, you must contact the student administration of the educational institution. Then ask what the rules are for checking your previous education.
4. Specific Questions
Some educational institutions want additional information from you. You can enter it in this step.
5. Address details
Enter a postal address here if different from the GBA address.
6. Payment of tuition fees
Via Studielink you must indicate the payment method for the tuition fee. read here how that works.
7. Confirm
You will see an overview of all your data. If everything is correct, click on 'Submit'. Studielink sends your details to the educational institution. Now check your e-mail regularly and log in to Studielink regularly. This way you will not miss any messages from the educational institution and Studielink. After registering with Studielink you will receive a confirmation. NB! You are not yet enrolled in the study of your choice.
