Credential evaluation and estimation of education level
With a credential evaluation you show what your foreign diploma is worth in the Netherlands. We also speak of an 'educational level indication'. The credential evaluation provides information about your education level and field of study. This information will help you make a study choice. An educational institution uses this information to place you in the right study program and in the right year. A credential evaluation is an advice and does not entitle you to a study.
Credential evaluation through school
Do you want to register for a study program and are you unsure whether you meet the admission requirements? Then take your foreign diploma with you when you register. Do you not have a diploma, but do you have lists of marks or information about your subjects? Then take that with you. The school can then request advice from the Collaboration Organization for Vocational Education about your level of education and your options within MBO.
Have your diploma evaluated yourself
Do you have a diploma from your country of origin? Then you can also have this assessed yourself by the International Credential Evaluation (IDW). The IDW compares your previous education with the education system in the Netherlands. Then you know what your previous education is worth here. You also know which further education you are eligible for.
Did you receive a residence permit after 1 January 2015 and are you entitled to the integration loan of DUO? Then this credential evaluation is free. This also applies if you are naturalizing or have applied for a permanent residence permit. You can only have one diploma evaluated free of charge via the IDW.
Apply for an education level indication yourself
Maybe you haven't finished your studies yet. Or maybe you couldn't take your diploma with you because of your flight. Then you can request an indication of education level (ION) from the IDW. The IDW then makes an estimate of the level of your previous education based on your information. You can request this free of charge from the IDW if you received a status after 1 January 2015 and are entitled to the integration loan from DUO.
Other possibilities
Are you not admitted to a course? Here's what you can do to achieve your goal:
- You can ask if it is possible to join a course for a few days. The program can then assess whether your level is a sufficient fit. It is not always possible to participate in a course.
- You can also ask whether a longer intake is possible at the school of your choice. This will give the school a better idea of your level. This is also not possible in all schools.
- After following a Entrance training you can transfer to a level 2 MBO course.
- Sometimes it is possible to follow a bridging program that prepares you for an MBO course, level 2, 3 or 4. Ask about the possibilities at the ROC of your choice. Or contact the UAF MBO helpdesk.
