A difficult start

Many refugee students find their first year of study the most difficult. Everything is new: language, educational culture, lecturers, fellow students and lecture material. A lot of new information is coming your way. A major challenge during your studies is the Dutch language. You often have trouble following the lectures. Lecturers and fellow students often speak very quickly. In addition, you have to read a lot such as academic texts. By practicing a lot with a mentor or language buddy, you ensure that you learn to speak the Dutch language quickly.

High speed

Refugee students often have to get used to the high pace of study and the large amount of teaching material. In addition, the educational culture is also different. You are expected to proactively participate in the lessons yourself and to be articulate. You often have to work in groups and give presentations to your fellow students.

Role of the teacher

A teacher is not someone who stands on a pedestal, but someone who is close to the students. So you can always contact your teacher. And lecturers also expect you to come to them with questions.

Take initiative

It is important to take initiative yourself. Even if you don't want to study for a while. There is always someone who wants to help you and you certainly don't have to be ashamed. In education, you can always contact your lecturers, student psychologists, mentors or study advisors with questions and problems. They can often help you with your study problems.

Find contact

Also contact your fellow students. Show interest in your fellow students and open up. Others will also be interested in your situation. Students can also give you useful tips about exams, learning material and other practical matters. And they can introduce you to student life.

Correct level of study

Sometimes the chosen level of study may not completely suit you. Then it may be a good decision to follow a different type of study. This way you can continue to work on your goals. Are you running into this? Then contact your study advisor.
