FAQ

We focus on your question. This gives you the support you need. For example, with your studies, with finding a job that suits your talents and financially.

For more information, go to 'How can we help you'

We help you to apply for money from the government, for example student grants of lifelong learning credit. In addition, we supplement where necessary for costs you incur for your professional development. For example, tuition fees, language courses, books, computers and travel expenses. Do you want to know exactly where we can support you? Then go to for more information how can we help you

The costs required for your professional development are paid by the UAF for you. Depending on the conditions, the UAF reimburses this, or you can pay for it yourself with a UAF Student Credit. Whether you will be reimbursed for costs depends on your personal situation.

You must at least meet these conditions:

  • You have a Dutch residence permit on the basis of asylum*.
  • You received your residence permit no longer than 5 years ago (date of decision).
  • You have started a Dutch language course at B1 level.
  • You have followed a previous education in your country of origin. This is comparable to the Dutch havo 5 level or 12 years of pre-education. Are you interested in one transition year (schakeljaar), training or apprenticeship program mbo-level? Then 10 or 11 years of pre-school education or HAVO 3 level may also be sufficient.

Additional conditions

Depending on the support you receive from us, there are additional conditions. Do you want to know exactly how we can support you and what conditions apply? Go to the page how can we help you? .

  • You speak English or Dutch.
  • You have followed a previous education in your country of origin comparable to the Dutch havo 5 level or 12 years of pre-education.

If there are developments in your asylum procedure during your registration at the UAF, this may have consequences for the support that the UAF can offer.

Please note: Without a residence permit, you cannot receive support from the UAF to start work immediately.

Are you just not eligible for our support?

Then we help you with advice about next steps outside the UAF. This way you can continue to build your future in a different way.

The UAF depends on donations and government subsidies. We naturally want to support as many refugee students and professionals as possible. Unfortunately we cannot help everyone.

The UAF sometimes supports asylum seekers with financial aid for taking Dutch language lessons or studying. If you do not yet have a residence permit and become a client of the UAF, we will be the first to support you in learning the Dutch language to a minimum B1 level.

After that, we can look together with you at your study wishes and at the possibilities of following a course. Please note: The UAF does not offer support for English-taught programs if you have not yet achieved B1 level Dutch.
