Today, the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF announced that the UAF Award 2024 has been won by Tadele Alemu (37 years old), who fled Ethiopia in 2017. He receives the audience award for his exceptional study and work achievements and his social commitment. As a scientist at Wageningen University & Research
Through research he contributes to the sustainable food transition.
A record number of almost 20.000 people voted online for the tenth edition of the UAF Award. The award ceremony took place during the 'UAF Live!' event in the AFAS Theater in Leusden on Wednesday 18 December, International Migrants Day.
Start all over again
Tadele Alemu fled the regime in Ethiopia, where he completed his master's degree and worked as a university lecturer. Once in the Netherlands, he had to start all over again. Despite the many obstacles he encountered along the way, he obtained his master's degree within two years. He is currently working on a PhD at Wageningen University & Research, where he focuses on the sustainable extraction of proteins from peas for meat substitutes. Alemu lives in Amsterdam with his wife and child. "I am extremely grateful for this award," Alemu said at the award ceremony. "It is a recognition of my work and also a symbol of hope for all refugees who are trying to find their way in a new society. My research is about the future of sustainable food. In Ethiopia, it is about food security, while here in the Netherlands, it is about sustainability. I believe in 'sustainable food' and would like to contribute to a better future."
Four nominees, four special stories
The UAF Award is an ode to the talent, knowledge and perseverance of refugees. Every year, the UAF Foundation for Refugee Students guides more than 3.200 refugees, from which dozens of candidates are nominated for the award. This year, four nominees were selected who excel in their study and work performance
and their social involvement.
Perseverance
The award was presented by Mirjam Huisman, director-manager of the UAF: “With every story I thought: this is the best, this one deserves the UAF Award. The stories of the four nominees are all impressive.” Huisman admires Alemu's enormous drive and perseverance: “He shows how important work and study are for sustainable participation and personal growth. Tadele Alemu is an inspiring example for all of us.”
Hope and connection
Huisman: “The Netherlands is ageing rapidly. There are staff shortages everywhere. At the UAF, we see every day how great the contribution is that people with a refugee background make to our society. It is important that we continue to emphasise this, especially in a time when public discourse is often polarised. This award, the winner and the other nominees stand for hope and connection.”
