UAF restarts Dutch section of Scholars at Risk

Signing Memorandum of Understanding with Scholars at Risk

The Refugee Students Foundation UAF has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Scholars at Risk (SAR) New York. This makes UAF the coordinator of SAR Netherlands, restarting the Dutch section of this international network.

After a lengthy process, an important milestone has been reached: threatened scientists can now once again be individually supervised by the UAF. This includes support in finding research positions, protection of academics in need and the promotion of academic freedom in the Netherlands.

The recent SAR New York Free to Think Report (2024) emphasises that academic freedom is under pressure worldwide. In various parts of the world, scientists are threatened, persecuted and even imprisoned for their research or critical voices.

With the signing of this cooperation agreement, the UAF will take on the coordination of SAR Netherlands. This will be done in close cooperation with Dutch universities and other SAR members, whereby joint activities will be organised to support refugee and threatened scientists.

The UAF already offers individual guidance and financial support to refugee scientists. Now the organization is again actively committed to supporting threatened academics, so that their talent is not lost. For many, this is a crucial step to continue their scientific career in safety.

The UAF is still urgently looking for partners who can financially support this program. Please contact us via info@uaf.nl.

Scholars at Risk is a global network of over 600 higher education institutions in more than 40 countries. This network enables scholars to continue their work in a safe environment, despite threats and persecution.
