The UAF's experiences closely match the recommendations from the research. “We see every day with our clients that the higher the language level during integration, the greater the chances for newcomers to get a paid job faster. A positive fact for newcomers and for the Netherlands,” says Mirjam Huisman, director-manager of the UAF. “In addition, according to the UAF, obtaining a Dutch diploma is important to get people into suitable and therefore sustainable work.”

'Important recommendation for politics'

The study also underlines the importance of well-organised asylum reception. Short procedures, few relocations and many opportunities during the reception and integration period for learning the Dutch language and participating in (volunteer) work. Huisman: “These are important recommendations that politicians should take to heart. In this way, we can utilise the participation of refugee talent faster, better and more sustainably for the tight Dutch labour market.”
