Mentoring for healthcare professionals

Medical assessment procedure

As a medical assessment mentor you can make a world of difference

Healthcare professionals who have fled must complete an assessment procedure in the Netherlands in order to be able to work in healthcare again. That is a complex process. The UAF offers guidance and financial support.

Experience shows that mentoring is a valuable addition to this guidance. A mentor can help mentees gain practical experience and introduce them to the Dutch healthcare culture.

What support can you offer?

As a medical assessment mentor, you can provide support by, for example, practicing patient conversations or helping to complete forms for the BIG registration. Other questions may include: how do I go through the route to BIG registration and what administrative actions do I have to perform? How can I find an internship to orient myself on working in the Netherlands? But also: what are the dynamics in the Netherlands between healthcare professionals and patients and how do I make this a topic of discussion?

What is the time investment?

The time investment requested from mentors is 9 months, because of the often long process of the BIG registration. The regularity of appointments can be determined by the mentor and mentee together and depends on availability. The UAF recommends that the mentor and mentee have contact with each other once every 2 weeks or once a week to make progress.

The refugee healthcare professionals (mentees) have different ages and nationalities and live in different parts of the country.

Yes, I am registering as a medical assessment mentor!

About the UAF

Refugees are people with valuable knowledge and qualities. From real doers to highly educated thinkers. Students and professionals who can mean a lot to the Netherlands. But… still few refugees manage to follow an education and find a job at their own level.

We are an independent foundation that represents the interests of these refugee students and professionals. In smart and effective ways we offer refugees opportunities to develop further in the field of study and work. We help them on their way with advice, guidance, financial support and through the use of our network.
